The Shire of Christmas Island is governed by a Council comprising nine members. Councillors hold office for four years. Half term elections are held every two years. The next election is due in 2009. There are no wards on Christmas Island. Council elects its own President and Deputy President.
Councillors are volunteers who are paid an allowance for attending meetings and functions on behalf of the Shire. Council meetings are held monthly except in January each year. Councillors also participate in a range of Council committees including the policy committee, audit committee and community consultative committee.

Foo Kee Heng is a mine worker and is also President of the Union of Christmas Island Workers and involved in a number of the temple committees. Cr. Foo was a founding member of the Council in 1992, and has served continuously as a councillor since this time, from 2002 in the role of Deputy President. Cr. Nora Koh is a nurse working part time at the Christmas Island Health Centre and part time as a Paralegal Officer at the Christmas Island Legal Aid Office. She holds a number of positions within community organisations including President of the Christmas Island Women's association for 18 years and Vice President of the Union of Christmas Island Workers. She has been elected as a councillor in October 2007. Cr. Koh is a member of the Cultural Planning & Heritage Committee |
